Arizona Eastern Railway Ore Car

The 2014 Ore Car in our custom series of O-gauge Ore Cars commemorating Arizona's industries and railroads will be the Arizona Eastern Railway Ore Car. The Arizona Eastern Railway (AZER) is a Class III railroad that operates 265 miles of railroad between Clifton and Miami, both in Arizona. This includes trackage rights over the Union Pacific Railroad between Lordsburg, New Mexico and Bowie, Arizona. The railroad serves the copper mining region of southeastern Arizona. AZER commodities include sulfuric acid, copper concentrate, copper anode and cathode, and copper rod and other copper processing materials.

What is now the AZER was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in 2011 but it has roots older than G&W itself. The AZER was originally chartered as the Gila Valley Globe and Northern Railway (GVGN) in 1885. Before completion of the railroad to Globe in 1899, the GVGN came under the control of the Arizona Eastern Railroad.

Of historical significance, the GVGN's first locomotive, appropriately GVGN #1, was purchased from the Central Pacific Railroad, its number 1195. When new, the 1195 was named Jupiter. Jupiter was the Central Pacific locomotive that met cowcatcher to cowcatcher with Union Pacific #119 at Promontory Utah on May 10, 1869 for the driving of the golden spike. In 1909, the GVGN sold the locomotive for $1,000 as scrap.

The ore cars, produced by Lionel LLC, will be finished in AZER's multiple color scheme and striping and their unique multi-colored logo centered on the car. A prototypical gray ore load is included. This classic collectable is available through pre-paid mail order reservations.
