Outdoor "G" Railroad

A New Layout is in the Wind

The long awaited Outdoor “G” Scale Rail Road (Garden Railroad) is in full swing. Three of the five planned loops are running. One will be for battery only The others will be electrically powered tracks so members can bring their trains from home and run them. The front of the layout will have a brick walkway with a rock retaining wall similar to the one the 7 ½ railroad team built. The layout will be elevated two feet or more above the current ground level. We are also planning to have a mountain, water fall, river, and several tunnels and trestles.

 Layout Update
Outdoor G-Scale

Before the summer session started we had brought in many tons of dirt and rocks. The basic mound was, more or less shaped and the rock retaining wall next to the fence was completed. Now the detailing of all the features lay ahead of us.

In order to get enough space for the tracks on the west side of the tree wells we he had to add some smaller retaining walls. The upper level on the south side is very congested and it took some time to figure out how to find space to install a lake, a river, two tracks, and a road.

First, the pond was installed, dug out again and moved to its present location. Next came a rough ditch representing the river that will lead down to the waterfall in the canyon. At the same time a small water line was installed that will feed water to the stamp mill on the lower level on the south side. In order to connect to the upper and lower levels with a road there is now a small mountain with a tunnel.

The site is now ready to be leveled and layout work for the tracks can start. We will start with the upper level. There will be enough left-over tracks from the over-head G-Scale to complete a loop with a 30 degree crossing. There are even enough track sections to complete the second upper loop as well. Although there are a few pieces missing for the long trestle bridge we can form those with the track bender. The track will be laid on a temporarily support since the complete trestle structure and the bends will not be ready for the open house in September.

Before the final track sections go in place some trenches needed to be dug to lay down conduit from the north end control box to the south end plateau for additional track power and some future 110V applications.

The outside G-scalers wish to thank the crew members from the 7½” group for their continuing help every Saturday. Without their support we would not have advanced as rapidly as we did.

4/16/2016 the outdoor G-group were busy pouring concrete roadway surfaces and track foundations, plus beginning the leveling process on the track loops. Trestle bridge bent placements are scheduled to begin after the last May Open House when the Museum will close for the summer.

I was wondering how they were going to stabilize this section.
